Turning 2 Bad Gamecube's Into One Good Unit
Around our place we have a Gamecube and it served the kids faithfully for quite some time and resisted there abuse for the most part great, but unfortunately one of the kids finally got it in there heads to jam there finger onto the laser of the console and well it never read a disc after that, no matter how much I tried to clean the lens or change the laser strength it was dead. But a short time later one of the kid’s friends donated us his old Gamecube as he had a Wii and that worked ok for about 2 weeks and then wouldn’t even turn on. While for some they would have just given up at that point and maybe bought a second hand one from the likes of GameStop. Not me so I got out my Nintendo console screwdriver bits (you can find these on eBay or googling around easy enough) and popped both Gamecube's open.
I started by examining the most recent one which stopped being able to be turned on and found the motherboard was actually badly corroded the Gamecube must have been stored in there basement where it was damp, but then thought wait a minute that laser is still good, so I set to work and used the corroded Gamecube as a donor for our first Gamecube. Connected up its laser unit and connected the cube up to the mains and TV.
I used some blu-tack to hold the door sensor down to make sure the Gamecube thought it was closed and popped a crap game disc in there (Charlie’s angels if memory serves me which got donated to Steve Benway) and powered it up. Disc spun up and started reading away and after a small wait it loaded up to the main menu! So I reassembled the cube after giving it a good clean and it’s worked great ever since!
Remember two wrongs don’t make a right unless you’re talking about Gamecubes
